Johnson County Humane Society 


We are a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization located in Johnson County, TN, in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of northeast Tennessee. Our current focus is to control pet overpopulation in our county. The purpose of the JCHSI is the prevention of cruelty to animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and the extension of humane education. It is policy to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served by the society, to seek to return lost animals to their owners, to seek suitable homes for animals without owners, to promote a no-kill policy except to provide euthanasia when necessary as specifically determined by the Board of Directors under the advice of a veterinarian.Volunteers Needed We always need reliable, regularly scheduled volunteers to help at the Pet Adoption Center with cleaning the dog kennels and cat colonies, feeding and socializing the animals, training the dogs, and generally cleaning and maintaining the building. ~Industries In 1930 Maymead Lime was the first privately owned industry to base in Johnson County. In 1960 the Leco Corporation opened hiring 161 women. The next industry, the Melville Slioe Corporation, came in 1966. This began a trend of industries moving into and out of the county. Today Johnson County has many industries which include the textile, woodworking, timber, ball bearing, and film salvaging industries. The Northwest Correctional Center, a division of the Tennessee Correctional Department, houses over 1,000 inmates and supplies 350 jobs in the county.
